Regular opportunities

If you have time to spare, share your skills and knowledge by working voluntarily. Regular opportunities are available across Calderdale.

Volunteering with Countryside Services

Volunteers play an extremely important part in the delivery of countryside management in Calderdale, undertaking many tasks ranging from site management, wildlife surveys, maintaining public rights of way, supporting education activities, leading walks and running the shop at Ogden Water. Volunteers get the opportunity to explore the local countryside, meet new friends, get active and learn new skills. Experience isn't necessary as volunteers receive onsite training and an induction depending on the opportunity.

Formal Volunteering

We currently run three formal practical volunteering work parties a week, which take place on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Volunteers undergo an induction on their first day and expenses are covered for our formal volunteering opportunities. For more information please contact:

or contact the Countryside and Woodlands team by e-mail: countryside@calderdale.gov.uk or call: 01422 284417.

Volunteering with young offenders

Calderdale Youth Offending Team offers a wide range of volunteering opportunities. These include:

Appropriate Adult: All young people (10 to 17 years old) require an Appropriate Adult when being interviewed by the police. If a parent/carer cannot attend you will be on hand to support a young person at a police station and ensure their welfare needs are met.

Mentors: Regularly meet a young person for a limited amount of time providing positive support and encouragement helping to increase their personal abilities and self esteem.

For more details see: PDFYoung Person's Mentor Role Profile [PDF 102KB]

Referral Order Panel Members: When a young person is subject to a Court Order and has to attend a panel, you will help to coordinate the meeting ordered by the Youth Court. The panel brings together members of the local community, victims, young people and their parents / carers to discuss and agree a plan of action designed to put right the harm caused.

Reparation volunteer: To accompany and support young people to accomplish tasks when putting right the harm caused by their offending behaviour by providing positive encouragement and support.

You need to be over 18 years old, able to relate well to young people and able to commit two or three hours a week.
