Vehicle permit scheme

Calderdale Council operates a commercial vehicle permit scheme at all Household Waste Recycling Centres.

Who needs a permit?

The following vehicles require a permit:

  • without side and / or rear windows;
  • flat back vehicles, including 4x4 pickups with a flat back and / or a crew cab;
  • pickups;
  • vehicles with more than 2 axles;
  • box or Luton-style vans;
  • twin-axle trailers up to 3m in length (including all parts of the trailer chassis and fixtures);
  • hire vans; and
  • cars that are unable to fit under the height barrier.

Note: You do not need a permit for cars, 4x4s or people carriers (with or without a standard camping-size trailer - 6'x4'). You can enter any site and recycle or dispose of any household waste without a permit.

What kind of permit do I need?

There are three types of permit, all are issued free of charge:

Recycling permit

Duration

Unlimited visits for 12 months.

What the permit allows

Disposal of recyclable items at no charge, at a chosen Household Waste Recycling Centre in Calderdale.

Vehicles that are allowed:

  • without side and / or rear windows;
  • flat back vehicles, including 4x4 pickups with a flat back and / or a crew cab;
  • pickups;
  • vehicles with more than 2 axles;
  • box or Luton-style vans;
  • twin-axle trailers up to 3m in length (including all parts of the trailer chassis and fixtures);
  • hire vans; and
  • cars that are unable to fit under the height barrier.

What is not allowed under any circumstances is:

  • trailers longer than 3m (including all parts of the trailer chassis and fixtures);
  • trailers with more than 2 axles;
  • vehicles plated more than 3500 GVW; and
  • pedestrians.

 

Non-recyclable items permit

Duration

1 year or 6 trips, whichever is sooner.

Note: This permit cannot be renewed before the expiry date, even if the 6 trips have been used.

What the permit allows

Disposal of non-recyclable items at no charge, at a chosen Household Waste Recycling Centre in Calderdale.

Vehicles that are allowed:

  • without side and / or rear windows;
  • flat back vehicles, including 4x4 pickups with a flat back and / or a crew cab;
  • pickups;
  • vehicles with more than 2 axles;
  • box or Luton-style vans;
  • twin-axle trailers up to 3m in length (including all parts of the trailer chassis and fixtures);
  • hire vans; and
  • cars that are unable to fit under the height barrier.

What is not allowed under any circumstances is:

  • trailers longer than 3m (including all parts of the trailer chassis and fixtures);
  • trailers with more than 2 axles;
  • vehicles plated more than 3500 GVW; and
  • pedestrians.

 

One off visit permit

Duration

The permit is valid for one calendar month from the issue date.

What the permit allows

This permit allows one visit to a single specified Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Note: Only one visit is allowed per permit.

Only items requested on the permit can be disposed of, such as: fridges, freezers, furniture or bulky household items.

Vehicles that are allowed:

  • without side and / or rear windows;
  • flat back vehicles, including 4x4 pickups with a flat back and / or a crew cab;
  • pickups;
  • vehicles with more than 2 axles;
  • box or Luton-style vans;
  • twin-axle trailers up to 3m in length (including all parts of the trailer chassis and fixtures);
  • hire vans; and
  • cars that are unable to fit under the height barrier.

What is not allowed under any circumstances is:

  • trailers longer than 3m (including all parts of the trailer chassis and fixtures);
  • trailers with more than 2 axles;

Applying for a permit

You can apply for a permit by going to the Halifax or Todmorden (Eastwood) Household Waste Recycling Centres only. You will need to bring the following:

  • your vehicle registration document (or vehicle hire agreement); and
  • a utility bill (no more than 3 months old) to show you live within Calderdale; and
  • your (valid) driving licence.

Note: Permits can only be applied for between Monday and Friday. Applications have to be made in person and only at the Halifax or Todmorden sites.

Please apply for a permit before you want to use it, as there can be delays when issuing permits.

Calderdale MBC reserve the right to inspect your waste prior to accepting it at the HWRC.

What is not admitted

The following are not admitted to our sites, under any circumstances:

  • trailers longer than 3m (including all parts of the trailer chassis and fixtures);
  • trailers with more than 2 axles;
  • vehicles plated more than 3500 GVW; and
  • pedestrians.

Trade waste disposal

We are not licensed to accept waste from commercial or business activities or trade waste.

Note: Commercial or trade waste can be deposited at: Halifax TLS, Lee Bank, Ovenden Road, Halifax. HX3 5PN. (Charges will apply).
