Council Tax Reduction

Help with paying your Council Tax

Council Tax Reduction is a local scheme designed to help people on a low income pay their Council Tax.

Who can claim?

Anyone who is responsible to pay Council Tax can apply if they are on a low income.

Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction claims are currently taking up to 3 weeks to process

Claiming a Council Tax Reduction

The quickest and easiest way is to claim online: Benefits application form

The first stage of the online form is a benefit calculator which will tell you how much help you may get before you go on to make the claim.

At the end of the online claim you will be told what documents you need to provide and how to provide them. 

If you are elderly or disabled and would have difficulty in making a claim online you can request a home visit by contacting the Visiting Team on 01422 393514.

Housing Benefit

From 14th June 2017 unless you fall into one of the below categories, you cannot claim Housing Benefit, you need to claim Universal Credit for help with your housing costs.

  • Persons who live in Supported Accommodation
  • Single Parents and Families who have more than 2 children
  • Persons over State Pension Age

Evidence

Once you have completed your online claim for Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Reduction you may be asked to provide additional information, this may include evidence of your wages or your self-employment.

How we collect and use information

Calderdale MBC will ensure that any personal information provided by you in your application for Housing Benefit and or a Council Tax Reduction will be treated in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998. Calderdale MBC is the Data Controller of the information you have provided on this form and is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office for the purposes of processing your personal information in relation to your application.

The Council is required by law to protect the public funds it administers. It may share information provided to it with other bodies responsible for auditing or administering public funds, in order to prevent and detect fraud. Therefore we may use the information you have provided on your application form to prevent and detect fraud. The Council may also share this information, for the same purposes, with other organisations which handle public funds. The Council will not share your information for any other purpose without your explicit consent.
