New food businesses are required to register with Local Authorities, 28 days prior to starting business. This is set in the Regulation (EC) No. 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs, Article 6(2).
It is also a legal requirement to notify the authority of any significant change or closure of an establishment. This ensures the authority always has up-to-date information on establishments.
Some businesses need to meet higher standards (see: Approved premises for food ), if they produce:
- meat products
- dairy products;
- or fish products from the raw state.
You can apply for this licence online via GOV.uk, there is no charge for this registration.
