New food businesses must register with Local Authorities, 28 days before starting business. This is set in the Regulation (EC) No. 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs, Article 6(2).
It is also a legal requirement to inform the authority of any significant change or closure of an establishment. This will make sure the authority always has up-to-date information on establishments.
Some businesses need to meet higher standards (see: Approved premises for food ), if they produce:
- meat products;
- dairy products;
- or fish products from the raw state.
You can apply for this licence online at GOV.uk and there is no charge for this.
Will tacit authorisation apply?
