Housing Options Service, Customer First Halifax

This service helps older people and people with disabilities to get their homes adapted to suit their needs and support them to live independently and safely. The agency can also help people to find more accessible alternative housing if their home cannot be adapted.
Grants and loans are available to pay the cost of adaptations and moving house. These include Disabled Facilities Grants (for large adaptations), Minor Works Grants (for small adaptations), Relocation Loans (for moving home) and Home Appreciation Loans (to fund home improvements).
The Disabled Facilities Grant is means tested. It can fund the installation of stair lifts and walk-in showers for example.
The Minor Works Grant is for adaptations costing less than £1000 and is not means tested. These can include grab rails and hand rails inside and outside the house, lever handles for taps, exterior lighting, moving electric switches or sockets, replacing cupboard handles and key safes. In many cases these can be carried out quickly and free of charge, without the need for an assessment.
If your needs are more complex, you can contact Gateway to Care and arrange a home visit from the Community Occupational Therapy Assessment Service. The occupational therapist can recommend adaptations to suit your needs and the Handyperson Service will carry out the work.
