This service can visit you at home to carry out small jobs that you find difficult to do and cannot get anyone else to help you with. You can get help if you are over 55 years of age or disabled, and live in your own home or a rented property.
The handyperson can fix a tap washer, put up a shelf or cupboard, fit a door bell or key safe, relay paving slabs, take down curtains or put up a curtain rail, fit door and window locks, fit an extra handrail on the stairs, and many other small jobs. The handyperson can change a plug or fuse, but cannot do any other electrical or gas work. The handyperson cannot do gardening or decorating.
The type of job is limited to small DIY jobs which take no more than half a day to complete.
You will have to pay the cost of all materials and there is a labour charge. If you receive a means tested benefit the labour charge is £10, otherwise it is £25. If the work takes less than 30 minutes then the labour charge is only £5.
If you need help with longer and more complex jobs, you will need to contact the Home Improvement Service
