These woodlands form a local nature reserve managed by Calderdale Countryside and Woodlands Service. Long Wood and Scarr Wood are typical of the Scarp Oak woodland found throughout Calderdale. The woodland covers 12 hectares of hillside between Savile Park and Copley, on the edge of Halifax.

There are woodland trails, but access for disabled people is very limited. Scarr Wood includes Woodhouse Scarr, which is a popular place for rock climbing and scrambling.

There is free parking on Albert Promenade and Scarr Bottom Road. Birdcage Lane runs between the two woods. There are no public toilets on site.

You can join the local friends group if you want to get more involved. You can volunteer to take part in conservation and environmental work.
