Full description:
1857 and 67 (?). Stone mansion of irregular, extended form. 2 main storeys above a basement. Eaves to hipped, slated roof. Italianate C14/C15 character especially to later main entrance block. This has an exposed, rusticated basement with a carriage porch (now enclosed). Arcading to 2 upper storeys. Behind rises low belvedere tower lighting staircase. West and south sides and 2 storeys with arcaded loggias etc now partly altered. Screen wall to east of forecourt with bowed centre. Interior of main block of considerable interest through much obscured by temporary fittings. Good entrance stair of marble leads up to main, top-lit, hall both with painted decoration. Other rooms apparently of some quality but now with partitions and false ceilings etc. Bankfield was built for Col Akroyd whose mills and model village of Akroyden lie on the west side of Boothtown Road.
