Halifax From The Beacon Hill (Document ID: 100462)

View of Halifax from Beacon Hill, West Yorkshire.

Author: H. Warren
Date: not dated
Location: Halifax
Format: Print
Document ID: 100462
Library ID: 35499235

This engraving of a view of Halifax from Beacon Hill shows the town at quite an advanced stage of industrialisation and development - lots of chimneys belching smoke, the far hillside above the town centre covered in factories and mills; the stone six-arched North Bridge (built 1771 and replaced 1871), the Halifax Branch Canal and railway tracks; the Square Congregational Church (built 1857).

The view is of Halifax sometime between 1857 and 1871, and was probably from a drawing by H. Warren engraved by J. Stephenson.
