Square Congregational Church can be seen on the right of the print. The Church and its stone tower with tall spire was built in rich Gothic style by J James.

Congregationalists had held regular meetings in Halifax since at least 1763 and the Square Chapel was opened in 1772. Square Church, with its 235 ft (71.5 m) tower and spire was opened in 1857 and funded by the Crossley brothers, John and Sir Francis, of Dean Clough.

The main body of the church was demolished in December 1976, following 2 fires and a gale between 1971 and 1973, with the tower and steeple being preserved. The the steeple and remains of the church, including the rose window, are integrated into the new Central Library and Archives building which opened in 2017.

On the left of the print is Square Chapel, the first congregational church which became the Sunday school when the new church opened on 1857.

Square Chapel Arts Centre, Square Road. (Formerly listed as Congregational Chapel). 1772. Originally the chapel, now divided into 2 storeys. Substantial building of red brick with painted stone dressings. 2 tiers of windows, upper ones with arched heads. Pedimented Doric doorway with engaged columns. High panelled parapet with pediment. Returns of 5 windows as front, with eaves to roof. 3 storey addition at rear not included. Interior mostly altered.
