From Weaver to Web has out-sourced the historical
material digitisation to Microform Imaging
Ltd of Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Microform set up a temporary
base on site within the Central Library eliminating the need
for the expensive and risky transportation of documents from
one site
to another.
For security and longevity it was decided that the creation of
both a digital image and a 35mm microfilm copy would be ideal
bearing in mind the constant state of flux currently surrounding
data types and data standards.
After
initial testing of various types of filming and scanning it was
felt that the use of a monochrome book scanner, specifically the
Minolta PS7000,
and separate microfilming would provide the best balance of quality,
speed and security for monochrome items. The small amount of colour
material would be digitised in-house using an Epson
GT-10000+ flatbed scanner and a security monochrome microfilm
copy created.
The
digital images have been scanned at 300dpi and are stored in TIFF
format. It was felt that this image format was the most stable
data standard at the time of creation and will be useable by future
computer systems.
For web delivery the images have been resized and converted to
JPEG format,
which provides both good image quality and relatively small file
sizes.
