Halifax's pedestrianised streets

Information for shoppers

Halifax town center - putting pedestrians first

The Council has invested heavily to improve the shopping experience in Halifax. Footpaths have been widened, crossing facilities improved and the pedestrianised section of Southgate was recently improved to a high standard. Closed circuit television surveillance is now in operation throughout much of the town centre to improve public safety and reduce the opportunity for street crime and vandalism. The Council is working hard to improve Halifax as a safe, high quality shopping centre.

To improve pedestrian safety and the shopping environment, no vehicles are allowed on Southgate, Corn Market, Crown Street, Cheapside or Russell Street during the busy shopping periods. In the past, illegal use of the precinct by vehicles has meant that shoppers have had to mix with delivery vehicles and contend with loading and unloading in what should be a pedestrian only area.

To enforce the vehicle restrictions which already existed, the Council has installed a system of automatic rising bollards to prevent vehicles from driving onto the precinct between the hours of 9.30am and 4pm. Outside these times, vehicles can enter the precinct for loading and unloading only.
