Halifax's pedestrianised streets

Parking and shopping

Halifax welcomes shoppers arriving by car. There are over 250 on-street car parking spaces in the central core and over 2500 spaces in car parks in or adjacent to it. In addition, there are almost 50 on street disabled badge holder parking spaces, which is more than twice the local average. Further details are shown on the car parking pages. A full colour leaflet showing where to park in Halifax Town Centre is available by contacting the Parking Office on 01422 392171. Alternatively, see Where to park .

A pay and display system is in operation using on-street ticket machines. The machines are environmentally friendly, solar powered units which were installed with a minimum amount of disruption. Car Parking Cards are available for those who regularly park on street and prefer not to use cash. The cards are priced at £10 each and are available from the Parking Office in Mulcture House on Mulcture Hall Road, Halifax. Parking time is bought by inserting the card in the ticket machine which then automatically deducts the value of the parking ticket from the balance remaining on the card.

The Council has responded to concerns that some of the parking spaces remote from the core of the town were underused because the maximum stay was only one hour. Some of these have changed to 2 hours maximum stay as shown on the car parking map. Some spaces on Commercial Street have been changed to 30 minutes maximum stay to reflect the short term parking needs of the shops and banks on that street.

Elsewhere in town, traffic has settled down into the new system. Access to most streets is still available by car, but by controlling traffic more effectively, the streets have been made more pedestrian friendly. This is particularly evident where improvements to the roads and footways have been completed. Pedestrian movement is much easier, giving shoppers better access to the shops in a safer, quieter environment.

Finding your way around

The town has been divided up into quarters which are accessible from the informal ‘ring road’ around Halifax. These are shown below.

Except for the Market Quarter, motorists have direct access to the part of town they wish to visit. New colour coded signing guides drivers into the correct area. Because unnecessary traffic has been discouraged from shortcutting through the town, streets are more user friendly both for pedestrians and for drivers needing to park near the shops of their choice.
