Street cleansing

Cleaner neighbourhoods - get involved

There are many different ways that everyone can get a little more involved in what happens in the area they live in and actually take steps to make real improvements to local areas.  Here are some examples:

Report the problems on our streets and public spaces

Tell us about problems like littering, dog fouling and fly-tipping on your streets and other public spaces: Contact Safer Cleaner Greener Services.

Attend or contact Ward Forums

Staff from our Safer Cleaner Greener Teams attend your local Ward Forums to help answer questions and deal with local issues.  Use our Ward Forum pages to find out how you can get involved and have your say on your local area.

Community clean ups and The Big Tidy Up

Community and Neighbourhood Action Groups, such as local Yorkshire in Bloom|External link groups and other community groups, work hard to create community pride and improve their areas for everyone who lives there. Safer Cleaner Greener Teams work with groups throughout Calderdale to help these groups with clean ups and other events. Constituted community groups can even apply for funding from a number of places to help with their work. Groups seeking help with their voluntary work can get in touch with Voluntary Action Calderdale|External link for more information and assistance.

Participants in the Barkisland Big Tidy Up

Some of the local groups we work with on clean ups are:

Use the Council's Clubs and Societies directory to find other environmental and clean up groups in your area, and even add your own group to the directory.

Community clean up events are often supported by different partnerships, including Calderdale Council, West Yorkshire Probation Service|External link Community Payback Teams, Pennine Housing 2000|External link, local schools, local businesses, Keep Britain Tidy and many others.

Keep Britain Tidy|External link is an environmental charity which works throughout the UK to promote the anti-litter campaign. They can provide local groups with information on clean ups and can even supply bags, posters and other materials and ideas on how to organise clean ups in local areas.

Men removing unwanted household items

To take part, all you need to do is to gather together a few like-minded people. To register your event, or to find an event taking place in your area, visit The Big Tidy Up|External link.

To give people a helping hand, everyone who registers will receive a special clean-up kit including bin bags, tabards, badges and posters, plus top tips and guidance on carrying out your tidy up and safety advice. You can also contact the Council's Safer Cleaner Greener Service who will arrange for your group to borrow litter pickers and will even send someone to collect your bags of rubbish following your clean up.

If you would like to arrange a community clean up, or would like more information on any other neighbourhood cleansing issue, please contact parks@calderdale.gov.uk or ring 01422 28 44 28.

We are doing our bit - are you doing yours? Don't drop litter, let's work together to keep Calderdale clean.
