Road safety information
Introduction
On a day to day basis most of us rarely think about road safety, except when we see an incident on a journey. Or even worse if we are involved in a collision, or a member of the family is either killed or injured.
On average, over 800 people are killed or injured on Calderdale’s roads every year – that’s over two people every single day. Each one of these incidents causes pain, suffering and grief. There is also the financial cost to the community. The cost of just one fatal collision now costs the local economy an estimated £1.8 million. Balance this against the human misery each of these incidents causes.
It is in all our interests to prevent road injuries and deaths. Every one of us will in some way end up paying the cost as a result of each collision. Either through the human cost and misery to family members or friends, or through increased insurance costs or taxes.
Encouraging every road user to ‘Share our Road Space Safely’ is simple but clearly important advice.
