For cyclists

Safer cycling - what we are doing

Cycling is becoming more popular and is now being seen as a real alternative to the car. It is a cheap, healthy and fun way of getting round and cycling is also kinder to the environment. However, cyclists are very vulnerable and have a higher injury rate, mile for mile, than car drivers and pedestrians.

Making the roads safer for cyclists

The Council’s Cycle Action Plan seeks to promote cycling by making it safer and easier by protecting the cyclist from general traffic. The Plan includes the introduction of cycle lanes on existing roads and the provision of cycle routes using quiet roads or on segregated ways.

The Council is working to provide a District wide cycle way which will become part of the National Cycle Network. The Cycle way will provide both a commuter and leisure route linking communities in Calderdale and neighbouring districts.

Cycling training

Remember what is was like when you learnt to ride a bike? Freedom and the chance to go where you wanted. Today with so much traffic on the roads cycling is much more dangerous. That is why each year nearly 1,000 children attend Cycling Proficiency courses. They are trained either by volunteers such as parents or teachers or by the Council’s Cycling Instructors. All these people are committed to making children safer cyclists by improving their cycling skills and understanding of roadcraft. The emphasis is placed on ‘on-the-road’ training.

Training is school based and consists of one half day session and one full day and is for children aged 10 years old and above who are using their own bike. We also run courses in the school holidays which include cycling for younger children (Level 1 Child Cycling) and Family Cycling.

For cyclists of all ages, we provide a selection of advice leaflets giving information on keeping safe on 2 wheels. These leaflets are free from the Road Safety Office. We also provide tailor-made courses for adults at cost.
