Road safety in Calderdale
The Road Safety Unit
The Council's Road Safety Unit promotes road safety in Calderdale to help people reduce their risk of being injured on the road.
The Unit offers advice for all road users, whatever their age or mode of transport. The most vulnerable members of the community are targeted as well as those road users who put others most at risk.
The aim is to encourage everyone to 'share our road space safely' using education, training, publicity (ETP) and community events.
The Road Safety ETP service aims to meet national targets in reducing road injuries across the entire community, particularly fatal and serious casualties and those to children.
The School Crossing Patrol Service provides Patrols at sites which meet the national criteria.
Schools have been actively involved in promoting 'sharing space safely' through the development of their individual School Travel Plans.
Education
Children's ‘Early Years’ are vital to the development of their road safety awareness. We try to provide a structured education programme for pre-school, primary and secondary school children. We offer playgroups and schools:
- Road Safety education and resources linked to the National Curriculum
- guidance on Road Safety policies
- training and advice for playgroup leaders and teachers.
Some adults also need reminders about their responsibilities for safety on the highway.
The Road Safety Unit has a wide range of free advice leaflets for parents, drivers and pedestrians on how to keep themselves and others safe.
Training
Training ensures that lessons learnt in theory can be put into practice. We provide training either directly or indirectly for:
- young child pedestrians and their parents
- teachers
- health workers and other professionals
- child and adult cyclists.
We are very keen to promote road safety activities to leaders in charge of youth and out of school groups. We help Brownies, Guides and Cub Scouts who are working towards their road safety badges by providing them with training packs. Road safety work packs are available free to Rainbow Guides and Boys' Brigade Companies (Anchor and Junior Sections). Leaders' notes are provided.
Leaders are most welcome to call in at the Road Safety office for work packs, posters, leaflets and videos.

Publicity
Publicity is an effective way of drawing the public's attention to local and national road safety issues. That is why we support the Government's campaigns on drink / drive, excessive speed and seat belts etc.
We can supply exhibition displays on a variety of Road Safety topics. Press releases, feature articles and comments are supplied to the media on a wide variety of road safety topics.
Local businesses and organisations are sent publicity materials on a regular basis. The Road Safety Unit publicises proposals from the Council's Traffic Section on schemes to make the roads safer. These include traffic management and traffic calming measures as well as the introduction of new pedestrian crossing facilities.
