Road safety in Calderdale

Vehicle-activated signs

Excessive and inappropriate vehicle speeds contribute to many injury causing collisions and the Council is inundated by requests from the local community to do more to tackle this issue. The West Yorkshire Safer Roads Group is tackling sites with the highest casualty rates by using both fixed and mobile speed enforcement. This still means that there are many areas of concern within our communities that don't meet the stringent criteria for fixed or mobile cameras through the West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership (WYCRP). Following an extensive trial of Vehicle Activated Sign (VAS) technology in 2004 the Council took the decision, following the popularity of this type of educational measure, to increase the number of VAS's across Calderdale. There are now 37 sites across Calderdale with a VAS. These are only in areas with a known history of speed related personal injury collisions.

The aim is to reduce vehicle speeds and reduce the numbers of people being injured.

Drivers need to realise that where they see these signs, historically this is an area in which there is an increased danger, both to themselves and others, from driving too fast. The signs give simple but life saving advice; the hope is that drivers are prepared to take on the message and slow down.
