Inspection and repair
Road adoption
Calderdale Highways are responsible for 1000km of adopted highway. We ensure these highways are routinely inspected and all necessary repairs are carried out.
Private (unadopted) roads are not maintainable at public expense. The maintenance of these roads is usually the responsibility of the landowner or owners of adjacent land. Private roads may or may not be subject to public rights of way. As such, unadopted roads usually consist of dirt or rubble tracks. Many do not have basic services such as drainage or street lighting.
To find out the status of a road contact the Highway Adoptions Team on 01422 392136 or to view the plans in person at Northgate House, Halifax please telephone in advance to make an appointment.
To find out who owns a private road you will need to refer to your property deeds or contact Land Registry on 01904 450000 or visit Land Registry|![]()
Developers who wish to have roads adopted that are constructed as part of a new development must enter into a Section 38 Agreement with the council.
If you require further information on Section 38 Agreements please contact Development Control .
