Vulnerable adults
Introduction
Abuse is mistreatment by any other person or persons that violates a person's human and civil rights. The abuse can vary, from treating someone with disrespect in a way that significantly affects the person's quality of life, to causing actual physical suffering.
Abuse can happen anywhere:
- in a residential or nursing home
- in a hospital
- in the workplace
- at a day centre or educational establishment
- in supported housing
- in the street.
The person responsible for the abuse is often well known to the person being abused, and could be:
- a paid carer
- a health worker or social care worker
- a relative, friend, or neighbour
- another resident of service user
- someone providing a service
- a person who deliberately exploits vulnerable people.
Safeguarding Board
Calderdale Council is committed to safeguarding adults who are dependent on others for support and care from abuse.
In December 2007 a Multi-Agency Safeguarding Board was developed. Calderdale Health and Social Care Directorate works in partnership with Calderdale Primary Care Trust, Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation (Hospital) Trust, South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust, West Yorkshire Police, Community Services and independent and voluntary agencies who provide care and support services, in order to address and prevent abuse. These agencies have agreed to joint Safeguarding Policies and procedures to respond to abuse.
