HIV and AIDS
The Council, and a number of voluntary organisations, works with families where an adult or child is HIV positive to deal with any immediate problems, and to help the family plan for long term care.
What is HIV?
HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. It attacks the body’s defence system preventing it from fighting illnesses and infections.
Where can I get help and advice?
You can contact the Brunswick Centre|
, which is a registered charity providing support for HIV and Sexual Health in Calderdale and Kirklees. Or you can contact any Social Services office.
What support is provided?
- Counselling and emotional support
You may feel the need to discuss your fears and anxieties. It may be difficult for you to talk about your thoughts and feelings with your family. The Brunswick Centre offers emotional and psychological support in a confidential and non-judgmental way. - Financial advice
Extra expenses may be associated with your illness. You may be entitled to various benefits or be eligible for financial help from other sources. You may also be given support with continuing to work. - Practical assistance
You may have physical difficulties in coping with the daily living, need help in the home or with travelling to hospital appointments.
