Children and healthy weight

Introduction

Eating healthily and increasing physical activity levels can help to manage weight. You can take steps towards helping your family to eat better, move more and live longer by visiting Change4Life|External link.

Children and young people need to do at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. Adults should aim to do 30 minutes of at least moderate to vigorous activity at least five times a week. For tips and fun ways of how you can help your child get active visit Change4Life|External link or call 0300 123 4567.

If you are concerned about your child's weight (overweight or underweight) you can talk to your school nurse or GP about it.

The school nurse or GP may feel that your child would benefit from a regular programme of exercise, in the company of other children experiencing similar weight problems, and may refer you to a local weight management club - Upbeat4Kids.

Upbeat4Kids Club

Each Upbeat4Kids Club has places for up to 28 children aged 7 to 17 years and where possible you will be secured a place at your local club. Places are limited and allocated on a first come, first place basis. If a club in your local area is full, your details can be added to a waiting list or you have the option to reserve a place on the next club that is convenient for you to attend.

Clubs run as a ten week programme. To encourage young people to maintain their new lifestyle, the clubs will offer further information on activities happening throughout Calderdale. There will be lots of exciting activities and exercise opportunities for young people and families to enjoy, from dancing, boxercise and gymnastics to walks in the local countryside.

For more information about the clubs visit Weight management for young people .

If you wish to apply for the programme on behalf of your family, contact us for more information.
