Fostering is for me, what happens next?
If you’re thinking of becoming a foster carer, it’s important that you know the process and what is involved. There are 6 stages all applicants must go through before you can start to foster a child. From the initial enquiry, we will support and guide you through the process as effectively as possible. The whole process can take up to 6 months and we will keep you informed of progress.
In summary, the process is as follows:
Step 1 - Registration of interest
The first step towards fostering is letting us know that you are interested. You can do this using our online form:
Step 2 - Find out more
For information about fostering, email: firstname.lastname@example.org, or phone: 01422 256053 (Monday to Friday).
Step 3 - Visiting by our fostering team
Once your registration of interest form has been received you will be contacted by a member of the fostering team within 5 working days. Providing you meet the mandatory criteria, they will make an appointment to come and visit you at your home to go through fostering in more detail and offer their full assistance and support.
Step 4 – Attendance at a 'Skills to Foster' workshop
You will be invited to attend a fostering preparation and training group. This is a time when you can find out a lot more about the task and do some very important thinking about how fostering will affect you and your family.
Step 5 - Complete a formal application form
At this stage, you will need to complete a formal application form. Don’t worry; we will be on hand to provide you with any help or support you need.
Step 6 - Formal Assessment
During the assessment one of our workers will visit you a number of times to explore all the issues involved with becoming a foster carer and how that will impact on you and your family. They will compile a report which you can comment on which will then be formally considered by the fostering panel. This is when a decision is reached about whether to approve you as a foster carer. A recommendation is also made as to the age, number of children and type of foster care you are best suited for. Providing your application is successful, this is likely to be 6 months from your initial enquiry.
