Disabled children
Introduction
From birth to starting nursery (around 3+ years), disabled children’s health, educational and developmental needs are assessed and supported by the Child Development Unit.
After this the Council’s Disabled Children’s Team may provide services to a child or young person aged up to 18 years if they have severe learning disabilities or are likely to need significant support throughout their lifetime in order to take part in ordinary activities. The Team’s duty worker is available to discuss and answer informal questions on Mondays to Thursdays between 1.00 pm and 5.30 pm and Fridays between 1.00 pm and 5.00 pm.
The Council keeps a Register of Disabled Children, used to help predict need and plan services for the future. Inclusion in the register is voluntary.
