Childcare Counts
Introduction
Summary of the 2007 Calderdale Childcare Sufficiency Assessment
During 2007, the Families' Information Service set out to evaluate our supply of childcare and to talk to parents about their experiences of using childcare.
We wanted to find out what you thought about childcare in terms of
- availability (are there enough places of the right type for your children?)
- accessibility (are the places in the right area and are they open at the right time?)
- affordability (do the places cost too much and do you have enough information about additional financial help?)
- quality (do the places offer a safe, welcoming and enjoyable experience for your children?)
We surveyed over 1,000 parents using written questionnaires and face-to-face surveys. We also spoke to parents who attended our Focus Groups in Elland, Mixenden, Sowerby Bridge, Todmorden and west central Halifax. We made particular efforts to consult with teenage parents, parents of disabled children and parents looking for work.
We also surveyed the top 100 employers to find out if they thought the childcare market was a barrier to recruitment and retention of staff in Calderdale.
We invited all our existing childcare providers in Calderdale to tell us what they believed were the main challenges and opportunities for the childcare market in the next three years.
