Tree preservation orders (TPOs)

Trees in conservation areas

The law requires that anyone planning to cut down or carry out work to a tree in a conservation area must give the Council six weeks notice of their intention to do so.

Notification procedure

Notification (for which there is no charge) must be made in writing giving details of the nature of the work you wish to carry out and providing a location plan showing the approximate position of the tree or trees you wish to work on. However, use of the form Tree Works  will help to ensure that you submit sufficient information.

Exceptions

You do not need to notify the Council if you want to cut down or work on a tree that is less than 7.5 centimetres in diameter (measured 1.5 metres above ground) or ten centimetres if you are thinning to help the growth of other trees.

There is also no need to follow the notification procedure when a tree is dead, dying or dangerous and action needs to be taken quickly for safety reasons. In these instances you can get further advice by contacting Development Control .
