Play areas

Introduction

The Council currently provides, manages and maintains over 120 equipped play areas throughout Calderdale. The range of play areas varies from traditional playgrounds to new adventure play areas, Multi-use games areas (MUGAs) and skateparks. The facilities at each play area cater for a wide range of children of all ages and abilities.

Fixed play facilities provide outdoor activities for children to use and enjoy in their local area. Playing outside is a fundamental part of helping children learn new skills, explore their boundaries and develop new experiences to learn and grow from.

The locations of Calderdale play areas can now be viewed through Calderdale maps online.

Playbuilder funding

In 2008 Calderdale Council was 1 of 43 local authorities chosen by The Department of Children, Schools and Families to become a playbuilder authority. This led to the development of 19 play areas across Calderdale over a 3 year period.

Slide

The emphasis of the Playbuilder refurbishment programme was on creating play provision for the 8 to 13 year old age group. The programme guidelines focused on challenging traditional ideas of fixed playgrounds and looked towards innovative, stimulating equipment and landscaping that would provide a wealth of new play opportunities for children.

New Projects

The success of the Playbuilder programme and investment from the Lottery and other grant providers, has sparked enthusiasm for improving play facilities across Calderdale.

Safer Cleaner Greener Teams continue to work closely with community groups and contacts, partnerships and friends groups to look at new opportunities for making improvements in play provision across the Borough.

We are currently working with local communities to improve play areas at Whitwell Green in Elland and The Stray in Hipperholme and Lightcliffe. These improvements are in the consultation phase, if you would like to make any comments about the play facilities, please email parks@calderdale.gov.uk.
