Museums and galleries

Calderdale Libraries, Museums and Arts offer an integrated learning resource called Discover, which delivers a wide range of creative learning programmes for schools. Workshops are related to specific subject areas and cross-curricular topics.

Smith Art Gallery offers 2 core school workshops: -

• Paintings Alive (Key Stage 2)
  Curriculum link: Cross Curricular

  Explore the people and places behind the fascinating exhibition of original oil paintings. Your class will use drama techniques, props and stories to investigate Victorian everyday life inspired by the gallery collections. Finally creating a masterpiece of their own.

• Brilliant Books (Key Stage 2)
  Curriculum link: Cross Curricular

  Your class will examine a selection of classic children's books through the ages and compare the difference illustrations, designs and styles. They will make a beautiful handmade book of their own using mixed media and recycled materials inspired by the gallery and library collections.

The workshops are for 2 hours and cost £3.75 per child for schools that subscribe to Discover and £4.50 for other schools, minimum charge £85.

As well as providing workshops for schools we can offer help and advice on self-guided visits or gallery trails, which will enable your pupils to make the most of their time at the Gallery. We also offer an outreach service for schools that are unable to visit.
