Artist: Marcus Stone
Date: 1859
About the artist: (b.1840, d.1921). Born in London, son of the painter Frank Stone ARA. He was taught by his father and began to exhibit at the academy in 1858 at the age of just 18. Frank was a close friend and neighbour of Charles Dickens, who commissioned Stone to illustrate ‘Our Mutual Friend’ in 1864. He also produced illustrations for other writers including Anthony Trollope.
About the painting: This painting reflects the artist's connection with Charles Dickens and shows a tramp sheltering from the snow, his little child wrapped in his cloak. A policeman is restrained from arresting the tramp by a kindly country gentleman, who has taken pity on the man. The work was exhibited at the Academy with a quote from the Tempest: - “Him and his innocent Child”
