A Mossy Glen
Artist: Atkinson Grimshaw
Date: 1864
About the artist: This West Yorkshire artist was born in Leeds, the son of David Grimshaw a local policeman. Atkinson knew he wanted to paint, but was forced to take a job as a clerk with the Great Northern Railway. However, by 1859 he was selling his work and became successful enough to become a professional painter by 1861. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1874.
About the painting: A Mossy Glen harks back to Atkinson's earlier works, which were often studies of dead bids, moss covered rocks, ferns and foliage. Much of its attraction lies in the way Atkinson in the clever uses of colour to give depth to the painting.
