Man Goes Forth to His Labours
Artist: Philip Hermogenes Calderon
Date: 1859
About the artist: (b.1833 d. 1898). Born in France, but moved to England and after a short period as an engineer started art lessons at Leigh’s academy in London. During the 1850’s he lead the successful group of artists known as the “St John’s Wood Clique’.
About the painting: The setting is the interior of a church and the side wall with four gothic niches is a dominant feature. Within one niche is a seated lady, whilst a young girl leans over her to look at her locket. Seated on the floor is an old mason, intently inscribing lettering with a hammer and chisel on a stone slab. It is presumed that the lady’s husband has died and the mason is inscribing the husband’s name on a memorial stone.
