The Gypsy
Artist: Thomas Webster, ARA, RA

About the artist: (b.1800, d.1888). Born in Pimlico, London and a member of George III household. He entered the Royal Academy School in 1821 and won the gold medal. Webster was a painter of narrative genre in the tradition of Wilkie and Mulready and was very popular. He shared Mulready's interest in subjects concerning childhood and education. His works make a distinction between exterior and interior space to represents the gulf between exclusion and inclusion, bridged by education and the subjects were often inspired by popular literature of the time.
About the painting: We see a young women seated by a window, outside an old women approaches the window. The interior is calm and tranquil, but the approach of the old women is disquieting and threatening.
