Local studies and family history resources

Introduction

The Local Studies section, located in the Reference Library at the Central Library, Halifax, houses a unique collection of some 12,000 items. These include books, newspapers, maps, illustrations, pamphlets, etc., on the history and development of the Calderdale area. New material is added regularly.

The nucleus of the collection was part of the private library belonging to Joseph Horsfall Turner, a local historian and writer; the collection now bears his name. Most of the collection is kept behind the scenes, but the items are on the library catalogue.

If you would like to consult an item please ask a member of staff. All material is for reference only, although copies of some items may be available in the Lending Library.
