Music therapy collection

A Music Therapy CD collection is now available from Central Library Halifax.

Our Music Therapy Collection has developed from various book therapy projects that we have run in the past, or are running now.

Book therapy is based on the concept that reading can assist people with mild depressive illnesses.

The term "music therapy" is often used in the context of therapeutic activities used to treat specific conditions, such as autism. We are using the term more generally to indicate that the simple act of listening to music can benefit mental wellbeing.

This is not a new idea: New Age shops often feature CDs of music to assist relaxation or healing. Discs of whale song, or new age music would be examples. Such discs may well deliver the benefits that they claim to deliver. However, we believe that anyone wanting music to assist with depression may be better served by carefully chosen discs drawn from the best music available.

Our Music Therapy collection contains music to assist meditation and relaxation, and music to raise the spirits and offer hope. We've looked for the best examples available from classical, world, contemporary, jazz and folk music. This is a collection of beautiful and inspiring music that could continue to offer benefits throughout life.

Clearly not everyone will react in the same way to something as subjective as music. Hopefully, many people will benefit from some of the discs that we offer.

Titles in the collection include:

Any of these discs can be requested free of charge via the Library Catalogue.

Professionals working with people with depressive illnesses are invited to contact us to discuss partnership working.
