Sound + Vision

Introduction

Sound + Vision means DVDs, Blu-ray, music CDs - in fact most things that aren’t books!

We’ve plenty of experience with them: Halifax was one of the first public libraries in Britain to loan feature-film videos, and in the early days of DVD were already providing a quality range to Calderdale residents.

There are Sound + Vision collections right across Calderdale: you’ll find them at Akroyd, Bailiff Bridge, Beechwood Road, Brighouse, Elland, Hebden Bridge, King Cross, Mixenden, Mytholmroyd, Northowram, Rastrick, Ripponden, Shelf, Skircoat, Sowerby Bridge, Stainland and Todmorden libraries.

Each stock is a bit different to the others, and although there’s a small charge to borrow Sound + Vision items, you’ll find us most competitively priced! As a further incentive, we've introduced a loyalty card scheme .

DVD and Blu-ray rental

Stocks range from recent releases to classics, world cinema to cult hits, leisure pursuits to travel, Bob le Flambeur to Bob the Builder!

What you pay and how long you borrow items for varies from category to category: check your local library for more details.

Membership is free: just ask a member of staff to upgrade your library ticket accordingly, and remember you must be over 18 to borrow DVDs or Blu-ray discs.

Music CD rental

We loan music CDs for a small charge. We stock everything from current favourites to experimental works, opera to the Grand Old Opry. In larger collections, you’ll find a fantastic range of classical, jazz, country, folk, world music and film soundtracks, but all our collections are peppered with unusual musical ‘nuggets - it’s what makes us different!

In addition, the CD collection at the Central Library has an extensive collection of sound effects on CD (perfect to liven up that home video or am-dram production) and wedding music (to help get right that once-in-a-lifetime moment).

If a title is available in the UK and released more than 3 months ago, we can reserve it for you too (supply may take a little longer).

Language Course rental

If you want to learn a language, brush up your vocabulary, or just for that quick weekend abroad, we have stocks of instructional courses from Arabic to Welsh  -  on cassette, CD or CD-ROM.

You can borrow courses for 3 weeks at as charge of 60p.
