Photocopying and copyright
Libraries with photocopiers
The following libraries have photocopiers available to the public for black and white copying: Beechwood Road, Brighouse, Central Lending and Central Reference (Halifax), Elland, Hebden Bridge, Hipperholme, King Cross, Mixenden, Northowram, Rastrick, Skircoat, Sowerby Bridge and Todmorden.
Central Lending & Central Reference (Halifax) also have facilities for colour copying.
Black and white copies cost 10p each for A4 and 20p for A3. Colour copies cost £1 each for A4 and £1.50 for A3.
Copyright
When making any photocopy the question of copyright should always be considered before proceeding. If you are in any doubt as to whether your copying is legal, you should ask a member of library staff first.
The law of copyright protects authors and publishers (copyright owners) against theft or abuse of their intellectual property. Where a work remains in copyright, restrictions apply as to what proportion can be copied, by whom and for what purpose.
Some guidelines on copying for a non-commercial purpose
Literary works
As a general guide, even when copying literary works for personal study or research only, you are not allowed to make more than a single copy, and this should be of no more than a “reasonable” proportion of the whole work. The Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals (CILIP) advises that you stay within the following limits:
Journals & periodicals - one article from any one issue
Published works - one chapter or 5% of the work
Ordnance Survey maps
The Ordnance Survey stipulates that, where a map is in copyright, you may make a maximum of four copies of one extract, not exceeding A4 size, from any one map. This must only be for personal, non-commercial use.
No copies may be taken in libraries for planning applications. Copies for planning purposes should be obtained from the Planning Section, Northgate House, Halifax.
Copying for a commercial purpose
It is important to be aware that, by law, copying carried out for a commercial purpose requires prior permission from the copyright owner or payment of a copyright fee.
The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Sticker Scheme|
provides a simple way in which you can pay a copyright fee and lawfully copy an extract from a book, magazine or journal for a commercial purpose. This can be done in the Central Reference Library, though you should be aware that there are exceptions which are not covered. Reference Library staff can advise on use of the scheme.
To help you decide whether your copying is for a commercial purpose, the Copyright Licensing Agency and the British Library have jointly prepared some FAQ's: Copyright Licensing Agency|
