Census enumerators returns

The Census is taken every ten years.

The returns for the Calderdale area are available on microfilm for the period 1841 – 1891 and on microfiche for 1901. The Census is accessible via the West Yorkshire Archive Service, Calderdale. This service is adjacent to the Central Reference Library, Halifax and open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 9.30 am to 5.00 pm.

Returns are available in the Reference Library in the evenings and on Saturdays. The 1881 British Census and National Index is also available on CD ROM (booking advisable) and via the FamilySearch web site: Family Search: International Genealogical Index|External link.

Additionally, the Library Service subscribes to Ancestry which offers free online access to the census records for England and Wales for each census year between 1841 and 1901. This is available in all Calderdale libraries.

The Central Reference Library, in Halifax, also sells vouchers for the 1901 census website, in denominations of £5 or £10. These can be used in libraries or from home.
