Central Library Evening Readers' Group
Jack Maggs by Peter Carey
"An Australian novel based on the convict character in 'Great Expectations' which places him centre stage and gives his story an ironically Dickensian ending. Literary references and debate about the nature of creativity are central to the author's intentions, but the novel is most readable as a well-researched historical melodrama."
"I enjoyed this novel. Very readable, and the characters, based on Dickens' 'Great Expectations' are very believable."

The Last Train to Scarborough by Andrew Martin
"The characters are thin as is the plot. It does little to hold the readers' interest and the use of the 'F' word does nothing to enhance the story line or the personality of the characters. Disappointing!"
"More like a Boys Own story. Only partly enjoyed 'The Blackpool Highflyer' because it was set in Halifax. This one was disjointed."
