From Weaver to Web: online visual archive of Calderdale history|External link

From Weaver to Web

The website contains around 20,000 digital images illustrating the history of Halifax and the surrounding area.

The material featured includes postcards, newspaper reports, maps and photographs, as well as personal diaries and accounts, business records, wills, acts of parliament and census returns.

Although the textile industry is the main theme of the website, it also provides an insight into the social history of Calderdale with tales of the harsh life led by many local workers and the origins of textile production in the Calder Valley. The website is also helping to preserve Calderdale's history, as much of the material would not otherwise be available to the public because of its age and condition.

The project has been made possible by a grant of £106,000 from the Big Lottery Fund, an organisation that redistributes Lottery-derived money to assist in projects for education, health and the environment.
