Census returns
The first Census that collected individual data, and was not just a headcount, was carried out in 1841. Censuses have been held every ten years since this date. Data on individuals is only released one hundred years after it is collected, and so the most recent release has been the 1911 Census.
Census data from the West Yorkshire Archive Service
The returns for the Calderdale area are available on microfilm for the period 1841 – 1891 and on microfiche for 1901.
The Census is accessible via the West Yorkshire Archive Service, Calderdale. This service is adjacent to the Central Reference Library, Halifax and open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 9.30 am to 5.00 pm.
Returns are available in the Reference Library in the evenings and on Saturdays and Mondays.
