Religion

Introduction

The old Anglican parish of Halifax covered an area similar to that of modern Calderdale and was the largest parish in Yorkshire, centred on the church of Saint John the Baptist in Halifax. Ever since the Reformation, however, the Church of England has competed for worshippers with nonconformist alternatives. Religion being an emotive topic, feelings have often run high in the search for truth.

Oliver Heywood led a turbulent life as a seventeenth-century Presbyterian minister, and was capable of a fiery response when provoked.
