Introduction

Calderdale has been home over the years to a huge number of interesting, eccentric, creative, and enterprising people, and our Glimpses can only offer introductions to a few of these.

Amongst these and of significance in very different fields were Anne Lister, who inherited Shibden Hall in 1813, the poet Ted Hughes, born in Mytholmroyd, and the engineer John Frederick Bateman, builder of several Calderdale reservoirs.
