Acceptable usage policy

Transmission, printing, downloading or receipt of any material which violates any laws is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to: material which is downloaded or printed in breach of copyright laws, obscene, racist or pornographic material, material which may cause anyone to feel harassed, alarmed or distressed or material protected by confidentiality provisions.

It is the user's personal responsibility to be aware of and to comply with this legislation:

Calderdale Council operates a web / e-mail filtering and monitoring policy in accordance with our legal obligations. You should therefore not use the computers to download or access information which is personal to you, or private and confidential, as we cannot guarantee your privacy.

Customers found deliberately causing offence to other users will be dealt with under the Library bylaws and may be excluded temporarily or permanently from the Library.

Users must not hack and gain unauthorised access to any other computer or network.

Anyone found damaging, deleting, impairing or otherwise harming Calderdale MBC equipment (furniture, hardware or software) will be dealt with under the Library bylaws and may be excluded temporarily or permanently from the Library.

Food and drink are not permitted in Calderdale Libraries outside of designated areas.

Only one person may use a computer at a time, unless an adult is accompanying a child or someone accompanying a person with a disability.

Users are reminded that the PCs are in public areas, and therefore their use may not be confidential (for example, in financial transactions).

The PCs in the Central Reference Library at Halifax (Floor 3) are intended for research and study. Their use for chat rooms or games is not allowed.

Access to the internet is filtered on PCs designated for children and teenage users. However, filtering is not wholly secure and does not remove the responsibility of parents, carers or legal guardians.

The World Wide Web contains information from a variety of sources and - as such - Calderdale MBC cannot accept responsibility for content, accuracy, or legality of any material or service found on the internet, apart from its own web site.

WiFi users only

The Borough Council of Calderdale assumes no responsibility for the safety of equipment or for laptop configurations, security, or data files resulting from connection to the library's network.

Users are reminded not to leave computers or any other equipment unattended at any time.

It is the sole responsibility of users to provide anti-virus protection, and to configure their laptop / PDA (Personal digital assistant) settings to provide the appropriate security settings to control access from other wireless devices within the library and the Internet itself. The Borough Council of Calderdale accepts no responsibility for damages incurred for incorrect, insufficient or incomplete security settings; or lack of adequate or up-to-date virus protection as users shall assume all such risks.

Users are informed that the library's wireless network is not secure and information sent from or to user's laptops can be captured by anyone else with a wireless device and the appropriate software.

No guarantee is made that users will be able to make a wireless connection in the library.
