Halifax Great War Heritage Society: The Home Front Gears Up For War
When war broke out in August 1914 there was a huge effort on the part of local communities to support the
fighting troops. Large numbers of committees were formed to service all manner of collections – both money
and goods – to help men at the front, in hospitals and at their training camps. It was very much a case of the
self-help ethic operating at local level. These efforts were later extended to prisoners of war and continued
right through the war.
Elaine will give her talk at The Old Mill, 14b Hall Street North, Boothtown, HX3 6TS. Refreshments will be
available from 7.00pm. There is a £2 charge to cover catering, etc.
