Calderdale Open Art Exhibition

Saturday 4th August – Saturday 15th September 2012
at the Smith Art Gallery, Brighouse

The Calderdale Open Art Exhibition is open to all amateur and professional artists.

  • 1st prize - £100

plus various other prizes and vouchers.

A preview of the exhibition and prize giving will be held at the Smith Art Gallery on Saturday 4th August 2012 at 2pm, to which all entrants will be invited.

Last years’ event attracted a total of 145 artworks, of which 84 pieces were exhibited in the community space at the Halifax Visitor Centre and Art Gallery. The work included paintings, prints, photographs, drawings, textiles and mixed media.

Entry conditions

Work in any two-dimensional medium of any size will be accepted, such as printmaking, drawing, photography, painting, textiles etc. Artists may submit up to three works per entry. The name, address and telephone number of each entrant, title and price must be shown clearly on the back of each work.

Framing

Artworks should be substantially framed with wooden surrounds and mirror plates, unframed canvases or metal frames should have mirror plates attached. Clip frames are not acceptable. Works will not be hung with any other hanging system.

Selection

All works will be submitted to a selection panel and entrants will be notified of its decision. The decision of the panel is final and prizes will be awarded at the discretion of the panel. Completed entry forms and the handling fee must be submitted with the works. Please note that the fee will not be refunded if the work is rejected. Calderdale Libraries, Museums and Arts reserve the right to refuse works that we consider may cause offence to our gallery visitors.

Sales

Works may be offered for sale. Artists should be aware that the gallery charges a commission of 33% on the price of works. 

For example: Artist’s price - £100, plus gallery commission - £50, Gallery price = £150.

Insurance

Artists are responsible for insuring their own works and are accepted by Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council entirely at the owner’s risk and we will not accept or be under any liability for loss or damage, although every care will be taken of work submitted.

Entry Fee

There is a handling fee of £20.00 or £15.00 (passport to leisure / student / retired) for up to three artworks. Cheques should be made payable to Calderdale MBC.

Delivery

Work should be delivered to Bankfield Museum between Saturday 14th July - Sunday 29th July 2012, 10am - 5pm, Sunday 1pm - 4pm (closed Monday) and artists should take their packaging away with them.

Collection

Rejected works will be available for collection from Bankfield Museum from 31st July - 5th August, 10am - 5pm, Sunday 1pm - 4pm (closed Monday).

Exhibited works must be collected from the Smith Art Gallery between 17th - 29th September, 10am - 6pm (closed Wednesday and Sunday). Works will not be wrapped ready for collection and all works not collected will be disposed of.
