Calderdale Gold
Introduction

Ever since London was announced as the host city for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games we have been excited in Calderdale about the many opportunities this once in a lifetime event brings.
As a Local Authority we wholeheartedly support the Games and the values that come with it and want to ensure that the people of Calderdale feel a part of the Games and that there is a positive legacy post 2012 for years to come.
There are many ways in which the people of Calderdale can benefit from the Games. It can inspire them to take part in new cultural opportunities whether they are sporting, creative or finding out more about Calderdale’s rich heritage.
It can help promote respect and understanding of other religions and faiths, it can help strengthen existing and create new friendships, it can allow people to demonstrate their courage and determination to achieve and last but by no means least it can reward excellence in areas such as sport, culture or business.
There is a lot of excellent work either already going on or planned up to and beyond 2012 relating to these values and principles. This Calderdale Gold Programme helps to demonstrate all that excellent work and the commitment of Calderdale to creating a long lasting legacy for generations to come.

A lasting legacy
The UK’s bid to host the 2012 Games specified that there would be a lasting legacy for the whole of the UK.
The Calderdale Gold brand has been created for use by local projects to identify the local legacy and to feed into the Yorkshire Gold promotion across the region.
The Calderdale Gold programme has been designed in line with the key themes of the Olympics:
- Inspire
- Equality and respect
- Friendship
- Courage and determination
- Excellence.
We have included a small number of case studies to demonstrate the value and impact of these themes.
This is the start and not the finish of creating a lasting legacy for Calderdale and will see things develop and be added along the journey. Many of the projects and events featured will continue to thrive after the Olympic Games and we hope that our summary gives you a flavour for what’s on offer and a taste for more participation in the future.
