Planning and regeneration services

Introduction

Calderdale is an authority with a fascinating mix of towns and rural areas. The Planning and Regeneration Service directly helps to achieve the Council's Vision for Calderdale: to make it a place where people want to live, work and visit.

Planning does this by shaping the future of our towns, villages and countryside and by protecting and enhancing their qualities through:

• developing planning policies and promoting sustainable development,
• working in partnership with local communities to plan and deliver regeneration initiatives,
• controlling development in accordance with the policy framework.

Planning and Regeneration Services consist of the following four sections:

Development control

This section is responsible for determining planning applications in accordance with local and national policy, following local consultation. Enforcement action is taken, where appropriate, when breaches of planning controls occur. The section also makes and administers Tree Preservation Orders.

Regeneration

Promotes projects in partnership with local communities that further their social, economic and environmental regeneration. Includes bidding for grant support and the supervision of project implementation.

Promotes economic development and new employment opportunities in partnership with local business and works with local communities to identify training needs to help residents access employment opportunities.

Encourages conservation of the built environment by providing specialist advice on the protection and enhancement of conservation areas and historic buildings. See Regeneration .

Development plan & policy

Produces the Development Plan, which sets out the land-use planning framework for the future of the District. This has previously been in the form of a Unitary Development Plan (UDP) but in the future will be in the form of the Local Development Framework (LDF).

Sustainable development

The work carried out by the team involves improving the Council's own environmental performance and working with local communities to ensure that the social, economic and physical environment of Calderdale is safeguarded and enhanced. The team works on a number of internal projects and with its partners' supports a wide range of initiatives outside of the Council. See Sustainable development .
