Listed buildings

Introduction

When buildings are listed they are placed on statutory lists of buildings of 'special architectural or historic interest' compiled by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990|  on advice from English Heritage| .

Not all the items listed are what we might naturally think of as attractive - some are included purely for their historical value. Some are not even what we would usually consider to be buildings, such as bridges, milestones and sundials.

You must always remember that normally all buildings and structures at an address on "the List" are "listed".

The National Monuments Record Centre administers a national database of listed buildings, and can provide copies of the 'listing description' . This description provides the 'grade' of listing, as well as a brief description of the exterior (and interior where applicable) features which led to the listing.
