How energy efficient is your property?
Introduction
- The typical office loses 60% of its heat through its building fabric (Source: Carbon Trust);
- The average semi-detached house can lose around 25% of its heating through an uninsulated roof and a further 35% through uninsulated walls. This means that for a poorly insulated property up to £325 per year can be wasted on heating bills (Source: Energy Savings Trust).
Reducing a building's energy wastage through insulating the building fabric is a great way to save money.

To find out how much heat your property may be losing by using the Thermal survey map
- Search for your property
- Select your property from the list.
- The map will re-centre on your property which will be colour coded to indicate its heat loss.

Thermal Imagery
Thermal Imagery is a way of measuring the heat loss from the roofs or walls of buildings.
Earlier in 2009, Calderdale Council carried out a thermal survey of heat being lost from the roofs of 98% of properties in the main urban areas of the borough.
The Council commissioned a company specialising in airborne surveys to undertake the survey. One plane completed 3 flights over the borough on the evenings of 23rd, 25th and 28th March 2009. The survey was carried out in clear, cold and dry weather conditions. There was no snow cover on buildings.
The information collected was analysed and has now been presented in an indicative colour scale. This shows greatest heat loss for energy inefficient buildings, through to minimal heat loss from the more energy efficient buildings (or those not heated) when the survey was carried out.
