Adaptations for elderly and disabled people

The Adaptations Agency provide a comprehensive service to elderly and disabled people in Calderdale who need to make certain adaptations to their homes.

The types of adaptations include:

• Major adaptations costing over £1000 such as installing stair lifts, level access showers, ramps and hoists, for which a Disabled Facilities Grant is available.
• Minor adaptations costing under £1000 such as installing stair rails, external handrails, grab rails and adaptations to assist sensory impairment, for example fluorescent light strips and flashing door bells. These adaptations can be provided at no cost to the service user.

The Adaptations Agency will:

• Help with a Disabled Facilities Grant application.
• Prepare specifications for the works.
• Appoint and supervise a contractor for the works.
• Inspect the work upon completion.
• Repair and maintain any electrical lifting equipment.

Eligibility for adaptations

Anyone who is elderly or disabled and having difficulty getting in and around the home, up and down the stairs or in using essential facilities, such as getting in and out of the bath.

How do I get an adaptation to my home?

If you would like an adaptation to your home you will need to contact your local Social Services office and ask for a Customer Service Advisor. They will be able to arrange for an Occupational Therapist to visit your home and assess your needs. If the Occupational Therapist decides that you need an adaptation they will send a referral to The Adaptations Agency.
